Main Plot

Suikoden III is set fifteen years after the events of Suikoden II. The story takes place in an area called the Grasslands, whose people are at war with the Zexen Confederacy. A cease-fire has just been negotiated and the fighting ceased for a short time. But while the two nations were warring, the Holy Kingdom of Harmonia is waiting for the expiration of the truce with the Grasslanders signed fifty years before. When this expires, they plan to launch an offensive to overthrow the Grasslands. Unknown to everyone, all the conflict and wars that occurred until the Harmonian invasion was set up by someone else with a deeper, darker purpose than expanding territories.

Some believed that the only reason for this is the pursuit of the True Runes, so a rumor started to spread that the Flame Champion, hero of the war that occurred fifty years ago, was alive and was going to use his rune once again. The Flame Champion is what binds the stories of three different individuals with different goals and viewpoints: Hugo, Chris, and Geddoe.

Hugo plot

Hugo, the young son of the Karaya clan chief, had to act as a political messenger to deliver a truce agreement to Vinay del Zexay, the Zexen capital. His journey was not the success he expected, as the person who received the message was not Zexen's head himself, but a representative (Hugo reasoned out later on that his mother told him to give it to the head, not to anyone else). After that, his party was attacked and pursued by the Zexen Knights, though they eventually managed to escape afterwards. But when they returned home, they saw their village in flames. There, he witnessed his friend Lulu being killed by the captain of the Zexen Knights, Chris. This intensified more Hugo's anger against the Zexen Knights. After the death of his friend, he encounters Lilly Pendragon from Tinto and joins her in her search for the Flame Champion.

Chris plot

Chris Lightfellow was just newly-appointed as captain of the Zexen Knights. The former captain, Galahad, and the vice-captain Pelize were killed during a battle with the Grasslands. Strong, beautiful and smart, she was adored by all, especially by children. She was a role model for all but loathed being called a hero. She did not feel she deserved it, for the thought of the child she killed in Karaya village always tormented her. Later on, she was put under further stress when the Lizard Clan from the Grasslands attacked the Zexen village of Iksay. It was then that she discovered that her father was still alive, and that she must find the Flame Champion to know her father's whereabouts. She left the Brass Castle and journeyed across Grassland with a man called Nash. In her journey, she encountered the Harmonian army and gained knowledge about their plan to dominate the Grassland. Chris teams up with the Grasslanders to prevent the Harmonians from succeeding.

Geddoe plot

When the war finally ignited, Geddoe and his group were slowly drawn into its events. First, they traveled to the Great Hollow and spoke briefly with the Lizard clan chief Zepon, whom he knew from the First Fire Bringer War. Not long after, they were attacked by what they believed were Zexen Knights, headed by Chris Lightfellow. It was later discovered that it was just a mere distraction, as they found out that chief Zepon was assassinated. His team then went to Karaya Village, where one of Geddoe's contacts, Jimba, resided. They were again attacked by the Zexen Knights and had no choice but to fight. Their efforts to save the village had failed, as Karaya lay into ruin. Mourning over their inability to save the village, his team regrouped and added one member: Aila, a homeless Karayan girl. They took her with them to Caleria, and Le Buque, where they would be led to a meeting with a Masked Bishop and a sorceress. Aila happened to know the sorceress and they struggle to find out what their connection is to the rising turmoil.
