Kira-Kira
Kira-Kira is the story of a Japanese family living in Georgia. Katie Takeshima and her older sister Lynn have been the best of friends ever since. They used the Japanese word kira-kira (which means shining or glittering) to describe everything they loved: from the simplest wonders of life such as Kleenex, to the greatest things such as the sky.
After their family lost their Asian foods business, they move to the less welcoming community of Georgia where their parents can work in a hatchery with six other Japanese families. Despite all the hardships, Lynn still sees beauty in their situation and teaches Katie to do the same. Welcoming a baby brother and entering school have been the major changes in Katie's life.
As Lynn reaches her teen years, she slowly drifts away from her sister and befriends Amber, a popular girl in school. Katie suffers from middle-child loneliness due to Lynn's changing attitude. Not only that, a tragedy will happen that will separate the sisters forever. After that, Katie will realize why Lynn taught her the word kira-kira and rediscovers its true meaning.
